Back Bay
Brownstone floor-throughs and full-service buildings between Commonwealth Avenue and Boylston Street. Refrigeration is panelled into a compact galley, and service lifts or loading windows have to be booked before anything is moved.
What Back Bay throws at a service call
Brownstone floor-throughs and full-service buildings put the kitchen in a compact galley, and the hood is usually ducted through a long horizontal run to the alley wall. That run is where the airflow goes: a blower rated for the kitchen moves nothing through a crushed flexible section or a damper flap that has gummed shut. Access has to be booked with the building, so the service lift and the loading window get sorted before a slot is offered.

- Wolf Range Repair Wolf dual-fuel and all-gas ranges from 30 to 60 inches, freestanding and the sealed-burner series. Ignition and burner behaviour up top, oven control below, and the harnesses and valves that link the two. The igniter sparking on every burner when only one knob is turned

- Wolf Cooktop Repair Wolf gas, induction and electric cooktops dropped into island and counter runs. Spark modules, burner caps and valves, induction coils and their sensing, and the control knobs and touch panels above them. An induction element cutting out under a heavy pan
- Wolf Range Hood Repair Wolf wall, island and pro hoods, including internal and remote blowers. Speed control, blower and motor faults, baffle and duct restriction, lighting and switching. The fan running at one speed no matter which setting is chosen

A rattle from the blower housing at the higher speeds was driving us mad. The blower wheel had lost a balance weight. Replaced, then he rebalanced and tightened the whole assembly.

Ticking from the spark module carried on long after the flame was up. Moisture had got into a switch under one knob. Dried, sealed and replaced. A quiet kitchen again, which my neighbours appreciate.

The building wanted the service lift booked and he handled all of that himself. The latch motor had jammed after a cleaning cycle. Freed and replaced, and the fault cleared straight away.

The model number and a plain description of the fault are usually enough for a straight answer on the phone. If it needs a visit, the $95 service call covers the diagnosis and comes off the repair.
